Mirali Shukla


Mirali Shukla is an internationally focused and award-winning researcher, journalist, and photojournalist. Her work centers on the relationships between people and the natural world, and the ways conflict and peace emerge from those interactions. She is currently the Deputy Chair of the IUCN Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy’s Theme on Environment and Peace.

Her work often explores the sociocultural dimensions of environmental change, and the belief that understanding the ties between community and landscape is essential to building a more just and sustainable future. Mirali holds a Bachelor of Science in International Relations with a focus on environmental conflict, and a Master of Research in Endangered Species Recovery and Conservation. She also holds certifications from the United States Institute of Peace, the Center for Conservation Peacebuilding (CPeace), and the Institute for Economics and Peace, which further inform her interdisciplinary approach. She is a past fellow for the Council on Strategic Risk’s Ecological Risk cohort and an ambassador for the Institute of Economics and Peace.

Her work and field practice are guided by a commitment to listening, collaboration, and documenting the lived experiences of communities navigating environmental challenges.

Mirali is an Explorer with the Scientific Exploration Society and is represented by the High Line Literary Collective.
